Moolenaar Sponsors Legislation To Stop Rising Crime

Press Release

Date: Sept. 21, 2022

Congressman John Moolenaar is a cosponsor of the Combating Violent and Dangerous Crime Act. This legislation would clarify the meaning of violent crime; increase the maximum sentence for carjacking; fix an outdated law that prevents perpetrators from being charged with murder if the victim dies from injuries more than one year after an attack; outlaw the marketing of candy-flavored drugs to kids; and establish kidnapping as a violent offense.

"I am proud to support this legislation because it gives law enforcement the tools they need to keep criminals off the street and keep people safe," said Congressman John Moolenaar.

Since 2019, Michigan has seen a 13 percent increase in violent crime. Murder and manslaughter are up by 30 percent and aggravated assault is up 24 percent over the same time period.
