Webster Supports Protecting Pharmacists' First Amendment Rights

Today, Florida Congressman Daniel Webster, R-Clermont, joined Rep. Earl L. "Buddy" Carter as a co-sponsor on legislation that would protect pharmacists' conscience rights when choosing whether to fill prescriptions for elective abortions.

The Pharmacist Conscience Protection Act, co-sponsored by 26 House Republicans, comes after the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued guidance warning pharmacists that they may be in violation of federal civil rights laws if they do not fill such prescriptions.

"This bill makes it clear that pharmacists are not forced to violate their beliefs or convictions. Healthcare decisions should be between an individual and their medical provider, not the result of demands by Washington politicians," said Rep. Webster. "Life is our most precious gift and an unalienable right promised to every American in our Declaration of Independence. I have fought to defend the rights of the unborn and to protect the religious liberties of thousands of healthcare professionals opposed to abortion. I will not waver in this fight."
