Eshoo Statement on Vote to Protect Marriage Equality

Press Release

Date: July 19, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (CA-18) voted today for the Respect for Marriage Act, legislation which codifies the right to same-sex and interracial marriage and repeals the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage for federal purposes as the union of one man and one woman.

"The consequences of the Supreme Court's decision overturning Roe extend beyond destroying the right to reproductive health care. Every right based on privacy is at risk, including marriage equality. Today the House took action to codify the right to same-sex and interracial marriage, proactively protecting these fundamental rights before the conservative Court tries to overturn them," said Eshoo. "I'm deeply disappointed that a vast majority of House Republicans voted against this legislation and rejected the fundamental promise of liberty and justice for all that is enshrined in our Constitution."
