Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement on the 21st anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001:

"The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, forever changed America and the world. The destruction, chaos, and loss of life will be permanently etched in the minds of those who lived through that day.

"We will never forget the hate and evil that drove the terrorist attacks on our nation that day, but we must also not forget the bravery of American heroes on 9/11 and in the weeks, months, and years of aftermath. The courageous passengers and crew members of the flights that lost their lives that day. The first responders who braved smoke and fire to save lives. And the many bystanders who consoled and mourned with their fellow Americans.

"The countless Americans who answered the call to serve in the Armed Forces following 9/11 are proof of the unwavering American spirit. Today, we pay tribute to those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Evil will never win -- even in our darkest moments. America will always prevail."
