Congresswoman Stansbury's Statement Celebrating Independence Day

Statement

Date: July 4, 2022
Location: Albuquerque, N.M.

Today, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) issued the following statement celebrating Independence Day:

"Today, we celebrate our nation's independence and the fundamental principle that all people are created equal. As we celebrate our independence and our democracy, this day is an important moment to reflect on what it means to defend our freedoms and our rights, including the democratic institutions our Founding Fathers created and the work of generations since to expand those rights and freedoms to all Americans.

"Our country was given long odds of achieving independence, but we persevered. Civil rights movements faced long struggles, but persevered. Today, as we honor our independence as a Nation and spend time with our loved ones, we must double down on our commitments to our democratic institutions and values, honor our veterans and all who have fought for freedom, and continue to focus on the important work ahead."

Rep. Stansbury is a cosponsor of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Protecting Our Democracy Act.
