Congresswoman Stansbury On Supreme Court Gutting Climate Regulations

Date: June 30, 2022
Location: Albuquerque, N.M.

Today, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01), a member of the House Natural Resource Committee and House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, released the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to limit the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act:

"Today's Supreme Court decision gutting the EPA's ability to regulate greenhouse gases is wrong and dangerous. The science is clear--climate change is here, and we must take urgent action to meet the moment. The Clean Air Act is one of our nation's bedrock environmental laws and provides the EPA with clear authority to regulate air pollutants, which include greenhouse gas emissions. The Court's decision sets a dangerous precedent, undermining decades of environmental law and a key tool for combating climate change. This decision, following on the heels of devastating decisions over the last week undermining Tribal sovereignty, reproductive rights, and community safety, provide a clarion call for Congress to act. We must redouble our efforts to pass meaningful climate legislation now that will prevent us from crossing a global tipping point, including a climate reconciliation package this year. As New Mexico's communities experience devastating wildfires and drought, we must act now to address our global climate emergency and support our communities in preparing for a more resilient future."

Rep. Stansbury's latest statement comes after weeks of her opposition to Supreme Court decisions undermining settled law on reproductive rights, gun safety legislation, and Tribal sovereignty.
