Today, Congressman Jim Baird (IN-04) released the following statement:
"It is my sworn duty to protect our Constitutional rights and to consider policy to protect our communities, too," said Congressman Baird. "Unfortunately, I don't believe this legislation would prevent future firearm-related tragedies like the ones we've recently experienced, but I do believe it would infringe on law-abiding citizens' right to bear arms."
"As the Supreme Court reminded us this week, the "right to bear arms is not a "second-class right, subject to an entirely different body of rules '" I appreciate the improved mental health resources provided by this legislation to our schools and communities. However, I cannot support imposing a more cumbersome system on law-abiding citizens, particularly on adults under age 21, preventing them from exercising their Second Amendment rights."
