Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Veasey today voted on bold legislative action to defend women's reproductive freedom. As Republicans attempt to criminalize abortion across the country, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Women's Health Protection Act to ensure Americans' right to make their own health decisions and the Ensuring Women's Right to Reproductive Freedom Act to reaffirm the right to travel throughout the country to access life-saving reproductive care freely.

"Today, I proudly voted to defend Americans' health and uphold our most basic freedoms," said Congressman Veasey. "In the weeks since the Supreme Court's extremist majority cruelly overturned Roe v. Wade, the Republican Party has begun inflicting a horrific agenda across the nation as they seek to criminalize women's health decisions."

"Today's legislation would protect Americans from this assault on their well-being -- enshrining the protections of Roe into federal law and cracking down on right-wing threats to legal reproductive care. House Democrats are committed to preserving the rights of every American, and I will continue fighting to defend health freedoms from these sinister attacks."

While Republicans move to punish and control women, Congressman Veasey joined his colleagues to advance two strong bills to defend women's right to reproductive freedom:

The Women's Health Protection Act will restore the right to an abortion nationwide, ensuring all Americans can make their own decisions about their lives and futures regardless of where they live.
The Ensuring Women's Right to Reproductive Freedom Act will protect Americans from extremist Republican politicians and antiabortion groups by ensuring no person acting under state law can prevent, restrict, impede, or otherwise retaliate against a person traveling across state lines to obtain a lawful abortion. This legislation includes vigilantes who could be empowered by states to seek out a person to obtain an abortion.

This legislation now goes to the Senate for its consideration.
