House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard E. Neal (D-MA) released the following statement applauding the Biden Administration's proposed rule to restore nondiscrimination and civil rights protections under the Affordable Care Act (ACA):

"This proposed rule is an important step toward justice for any patient who has been subject to discrimination in the health care system. At a time when the rights of LGBTQ people and women seeking reproductive care are endangered, this rule will properly enforce Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act and counteract the prior administration's attacks on these critical protections. I'm pleased that this rule also recognizes the urgency in reforming clinical algorithms. The Ways and Means Committee has examined the misuse of race in health care that stems from these algorithms, and applying these nondiscrimination protections will not only improve care but also help eliminate racial disparities in patient outcomes.

"Yet again, President Biden is sending the strong message that discrimination has no place in our health care system, and I look forward to working with his administration to finalize this regulation as quickly as possible."
