Davids Statement on New Democrat Coalition Meeting with President Biden

Statement

Date: March 30, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Representative Sharice Davids issued the following statement after meeting with President Biden and White House staff along with her New Democrat Coalition colleagues:

"I always welcome the opportunity to share the priorities of the Kansas Third District with the President, and today's meeting with my New Dem colleagues was comprehensive and productive. I thanked him for his attention during the State of the Union on reducing inflation and lowering the costs that are weighing most heavily on Kansans--and asked that he now turn those words into actions.

The most immediate opportunity I raised is to build on bipartisan successes like the infrastructure law and pass a major supply chain and economic package that invests in American manufacturing. We've been dependent on goods made in other countries for far too long, and Kansans are paying the price. I also asked President Biden to deliver on promises to lower drug costs, which continue to make up too much of families' budgets each month. I believe that we can find consensus on these and urged the President to work with New Dems and across the aisle to do so."

Background

The House and Senate have both passed versions of a major, bipartisan economic package that addresses supply chain issues and promotes long-term American competitiveness. It now moves to conference, where negotiators will iron out the differences.
Davids has been a vocal supporter of the legislation, visiting local manufacturers who would benefit from the legislation and speaking with General Motors workers in KCK, where the factory was idle for months last year due to the semiconductor shortage.
The House version, the America COMPETES Act, includes Davids' amendment to ensure small businesses are given opportunities to participate in federal supply chain upgrades.
The amendment would ensure that updates to the nation's Strategic National Stockpile of medical supplies consider small and mid-sized manufacturers, who have stepped up over the last two years to fill in gaps in our supply chains.
Additionally, Davids has been a staunch advocate for lowering prescription drug prices, joining Kansas parents and seniors earlier this month to hear their experience with high costs of medications and calling for further action.
