Congresswoman Wilson Votes for Meaningful Gun Reform

Today, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24) voted to approve the final passage of S. 2938, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act in the House.

"For too long, our country's gun violence epidemic has ravaged communities everywhere, and I am tired of burying young black boys," said Congresswoman Wilson. "Finally, Congress has listened to the cries of the victims of gun violence and rebuked the gun lobby. I am proud to vote for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and deliver real solutions in our fight to prevent gun violence and address its root causes.

"This legislation is a long-awaited mark of progress, but our work is not done. I have long advocated for increased funding for mental health provisions and additional care for our schoolchildren by building pathways away from violence, but until we ban assault weapons, we are nowhere near the finish line. I will not stop fighting until weapons of war are removed from our streets. Today is a small but necessary step in the right direction to honor the countless victims, families, and survivors who continue feeling the pain of gun violence."

The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act is the first meaningful piece of legislation passed to address the epidemic of gun violence in America in decades and builds on priorities that Congresswoman Wilson has championed for years. As an educator, Congresswoman Wilson understands that violence prevention efforts should focus on schools and empower children with much-needed resources.

Thus, Congresswoman Wilson welcomes the increased funding for school-based mental health care, trauma support, out-of-school programs, and resources that will empower educators and support staff to address the holistic health needs of our children.

This is a commonsense, bipartisan proposal to protect America's children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country.
