Wasserman Schultz Applauds Biden Administration Extension of Expired Work Permits

Statement

Date: May 5, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-23) released the following statement in response to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announcement this week that immigrant workers whose employment permits expire, under certain circumstances will be able to keep working legally for 18 months after expiration:

"Huge relief has arrived for thousands of people in South Florida and across the country! While the major USCIS backlog is being processed, work permits have been extended to make sure that businesses don't lose valuable employees and employees don't lose their job simply because of bureaucracy.

This move by the Biden Administration grants a lifeline to the thousands of people put in turmoil because of expiration dates that are now extended for eighteen months. Along with my Florida Congressional colleagues, I have for months pushed for this extension to address the flood of constituents who contacted my office because they lost jobs and were ineligible for government benefits.

It is a classic win-win: this decision will help individuals applying for EAD reauthorization support themselves and their families, and it also allows employers to maintain a continuity of operations. Thank you to the Biden Administration and Director Ur Jaddou for making this important decision to help our friends and neighbors."
