Statement

Date: Feb. 25, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Judicial Branch

Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), an attorney and former JAG officer, released the following statement praising Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson:

"Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson brings a breadth of experience to her work on the bench, which makes her supremely qualified to sit on our nation's highest court. Born in Washington, D.C., raised in Miami, and educated at Harvard and Harvard Law School, Judge Jackson understands how our courts shape our communities and our lives. She would bring to the job experience working as a public defender, a clerk for Justice Breyer, years on the bench, and service as Vice-Chair on the United States Sentencing Commission. To her, ensuring equal justice under the law is a calling and a public service.

"Nominating Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson would be historic. She would become the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court and only the third African American justice in our nation's nearly 246-year history. That matters. Supreme Court justices have immense power through their decisions, to shape the lives of everyday Americans. A fair and just Supreme Court reflects the perspectives, lived experiences, and diversity of our country. Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson would break barriers, shape our nation's laws for the better, and set a new example for what a Supreme Court Justice looks like for others to follow in her footsteps."
