Grand Island to Receive $6.3 Million Federal Grant for Major Rail Project New Rail Sidings Will Meet Increased Demand, Encourage Economic Growth

U.S. Senator Deb Fischer, a member of the Senate Commerce Committee, released the following statement today announcing that Nebraska Central Railroad will receive a $6.3 million grant to construct four new rail sidings. Senator Fischer sent a letter in support of this grant made possible by the infrastructure law, which Senator Fischer also supported:

"I supported this federal investment because it will bring good things to the community of Grand Island. The project will assist agricultural producers in speeding-up delivery of their world-class products to market and alleviate rail congestion. In turn, that's going to spur economic development and job creation in the region."

"The $6.32 million grant going to Nebraska Central Railroad is a great benefit to the City of Grand Island. The construction of four additional sidings at Nebraska Central Railroad will help us meet increased rail demand from local industries and it will enable rail customers to transport their products with greater efficiency. The economic opportunities that will result from the grant will encourage economic growth and jobs in our area. I express special thanks to United States Senator Deb Fischer for supporting the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and for also supporting the grant application. Grand Island and our surrounding area benefit from Senator Fischer's excellent leadership," said Grand Island Mayor Roger Steele.

The federal grant is through the Department of Transportation's Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Grant Program. The investment will enable construction of four rail sidings that will help meet increased rail demand, alleviate interchange congestion, and reduce turn times of ethanol, grain, and sand unit trains.
