U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) today led a press conference on the latest inflation metrics and the impact sky-high prices are having on consumers, businesses, and farmers. Sen. WASHINGTON POST: Prices climbed 7.9% in February, compared with last year, with war in Ukraine likely to push inflation even higher
· ""This isn't just due to what's happening in Ukraine,' said Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) during a press conference Thursday. "It's due to the administration's policies.' Flanked by fellow Republicans, Fischer said it had hammered farmers in her states, who saw the cost of fertilizer spike by about 200 percent. In doing so, she sought to rebut one of the Biden administration's more positive indicators, stressing inflation is "erasing any kind of increase American workers have seen in their wages.'"

WASHINGTON EXAMINER: GOP senators hit Biden administration over inflation report
· At a press conference at the Capitol on Thursday, Sen. Deb Fischer attributed the spike to President Joe Biden's policies. "Inflation is really killing us," the Nebraska Republican said. "And what does the president say? What is President Biden saying? He says he can't do much. He can't do much to address especially rising gas prices. That's unacceptable. We need to restore American energy independence, and we need to look at real solutions on how we can help to drive down these continuing costs and to provide some relief for our families, our businesses, our seniors."

NEBRASKA EXAMINER: U.S. Senate Republicans attack Biden on energy costs, regulations after new inflation report
· "Nebraska's Deb Fischer and fellow U.S. Senate Republicans slammed President Joe Biden on Thursday for the sharp rise in consumer prices, calling for policy shifts to increase the U.S. energy supply, roll back regulations and curb spending."

A copy of Sen. Fischer's opening remarks as prepared for delivery is pasted below:

The American people are continuing to get hit hard by the rising cost of daily living expenses.

Just this morning, we heard that the Consumer Price Index has risen to 7.9% year over year.

In the Midwest, that number is 8%.

Let's take a look at some of the biggest year over year increases.

Fuel oil is up 44%.

Used cars are up 41%.

Ground beef is up 13%.

Farmers are getting ready to make planting decisions for the season and they need to take into account the fact that the cost of fertilizer is up 200%.

Gas prices are at an all-time high. And have been rising for months.

This increase isn't just due to Ukraine -- it's due to the administration's policies.

The national average is $4.25. In some areas of the country, it's much higher than that.

It's estimated these high prices would cost a typical family an additional $2,000 a year.

This is largely erasing any wage gains American families have secured over the last few years.

I was at a coffee shop in Nebraska recently. The owner told me his electric bill went from $40 a month to over $300 a month.

Every day I hear from Nebraskans who are frustrated. They are struggling. Inflation is their number one concern.

People who are living on fixed incomes are especially under a lot of stress.

And yet President Biden says he "can't do much" to address rising gas prices.

That's unacceptable.

We need to restore American energy independence.

We need real solutions that will help drive down costs and provide some relief for families, communities, and businesses.
