Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after President Joe Biden announced a U.S. embargo on purchase of Russian oil.

"Amid Vladimir Putin's ongoing and unprovoked war against the Ukrainian people, the United States and our allies should have no part in feeding the coffers of an unhinged dictator. Indeed, President Joe Biden should do everything in his power to cut off any funding streams to Putin's war chest. While I am encouraged that the president announced the U.S. will finally stop buying Russian oil and energy products, this key sanction should have happened much sooner -- not because of pressure from Congress and public outrage, but because it is the right thing to do."

Last week, Senators Jerry Moran (R-KS) and Roger Marshall (R-KS) joined Cole in sending a letter to President Joe Biden, urging him to immediately institute such an embargo while encouraging America's allies and global partners to take similar, immediate actions. Read the letter here.

Additionally, Cole introduced the Prohibition on Imports of Russian Oil Act last week, which would immediately cease all U.S. imports of Russian oil and other petroleum-based energy products. The bill currently has 30 cosponsors.
