Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) spoke on the House floor today during debate on a resolution condemning bomb threats against Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), including the two in the District of Columbia--Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia.

"This resolution not only condemns these threats of violence but also reaffirms support for HBCUs and their students, including the two HBCUs in my district," Norton said.

Norton's floor remarks, as prepared for delivery, follow.

Madam Speaker, I rise in support of this resolution condemning threats of violence against Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Representing the District of Columbia, I represent two HBCUs, Howard University and the University of the District of Columbia. Last month, several D.C. schools were also targeted, including my own alma mater, Dunbar High School.

This resolution is important to not only express our outrage at these threats of violence, but to reaffirm our commitment to the students, faculty and staff at HBCUs. HBCUs are responsible for educating the next generation and preparing them for their careers. The value they provide to the District of Columbia and the country cannot be overstated.
