DeLauro Statement on Passing of Former Congressman John Edward Porter

Statement

Date: June 6, 2022

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, today issued this statement following news that Congressman John Edward Porter had passed away:

"I am saddened to hear the news of my friend John Edward Porter's passing. Serving in the House for 20 years from 1980-2000, John embodied the highest ideals of public service. He served on the House Appropriations Committee as the Chair of the Subcommittee on Labor, Health & Human Services and Education, and used his position to support important health and biomedical research. In fact, under his leadership, the committee doubled the amount of funding available to the National Institutes of Health. I served on the LHHS subcommittee under his leadership and learned a tremendous amount from the example he set.

"John was particularly known for his work to advance biomedical research, with the Neuroscience Research Center on the campus of National Institutes of Health named in his honor in 2014. He worked hard to support NIH's ability to allocate resources to promising areas of research, and resisted calls to allocate research funding for specific diseases. He wisely pointed out that research in one area often offers unexpected insights into others.

"His legacy will continue in the scientific breakthroughs made possible by his work. John was an incredible public servant, and he will be missed greatly. I extend my condolences to his family and friends."
