DeLauro Applauds Passage of Child Tax Credit in Connecticut State Budget

Statement

DeLauro has Advocated for the Legislation Since 2003 and is Credited for its Inclusion in the American Rescue Plan

House Appropriations Committee Chair Rosa DeLauro applauded the passage of the Child Tax Credit in the fiscal year 2023 Connecticut state budget. Connecticut is now one of only a handful of states to adopt a fully refundable Child Tax Credit. The 2023 budget adjustment bill, signed into law by Governor Ned Lamont on May 9 includes a $250 per child, up to 3 children, tax credit for lower- and middle-earning families.

"This is an important step to cut costs for working families in Connecticut, and I am proud to see the inclusion of a Child Tax Credit passed in this year's state budget -- it is a lifeline to the middle class and lifted half of our nation's children out of poverty," said Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro. "I have been fighting for the Child Tax Credit since 2003. The inclusion of my bill to expand and improve the Child Tax Credit in the American Rescue Plan was the largest tax cut for working families in a generation. These payments provide breathing room for families to buy things like diapers, groceries, clothes, and more -- this is about helping families feed their kids, provide shelter, and household necessities. In Connecticut, 600,000 children and their families will benefit from this credit. The Child Tax Credit puts money directly into the pockets of families and helps combat rising costs. I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to make the federal monthly expanded Child Tax Credit permanent."

The Child Tax Credit was expanded and improved in the American Rescue Plan based on key provisions from DeLauro's legislation, the American Family Act. This inclusion paved the way for Connecticut to implement this policy at the state level.
