Rep. Barry Moore warns drugs are coming to a town near you

Statement

Date: May 12, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Drugs

Rep. Barry Moore (AL-02) spoke today on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives about the threats facing Americans from the escalating border crisis. With more illegal immigration and fewer deportations under the Biden administration, more criminals are coming and bringing dangerous drugs that pose a danger to every community in the country.

Excerpts from Moore's speech: "If you want to pay passage to the drug cartel, you have an option. You can backpack heroin, fentanyl, or cocaine across the southern border. Now the thing we need to be reminded of is those drugs are not going to stay in those border towns. We saw that this year we are losing one person every five minutes to fentanyl overdoses in our country. We're setting a new record level there, and there were a lot of sad mothers on Mothers Day this past Sunday. "A physician friend of mine in a college town warned me we're seeing a lot of young people who might think they're getting a Xanax and they're getting something laced with fentanyl. That's one of the warnings we are issuing here today is that drugs are coming to a town near you."

Background:

On almost every important border security metric, we are trending the wrong direction.

221,303 migrant encounters in March

Under President Biden, 2.4 million illegal immigrants have crossed the southern border. This does not count the got-aways. The Department of Homeland Security estimates that when Title 42 is lifted, illegal crossings could climb from 12,000 to 18,000 crossers per day.

68% drop in deportations in 2021

This is the lowest level in 26 years. Additionally, about 700,000, equal to the population of Vermont, have gotten away from law enforcement.

42 arrested on terror watch list under Biden

The Biden administration has said they are tracking these terrorists, which means they could have been released into our communities after apprehension. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has apprehended 321 gang affiliated illegal immigrants crossing the border. We are on track to have more gang affiliated illegals cross our southern border than last year.

134% increase in fentanyl border seizures in FY2021

The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has warned of a "nationwide spike" in fentanyl-related mass overdoses as it says the drug is killing Americans at an "unprecedented" rate." The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that last year for the first time more than 100,000 Americans died of drug overdoses over a 12-month period. About two-thirds of the deaths were linked to fentanyl and other synthetic drugs, which can be 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, heroin or prescription opioids.
