Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) announced Mackenzie Monahan, a junior at Southington High School, is the winner of this year's Congressional Art Competition for Connecticut's First District.

"I want to congratulate all the students who participated in this year's Art Competition for their outstanding work," said Larson. "Mackenzie's artwork demonstrates her extraordinary talent and attention to detail. We are all very proud of her accomplishment."

"I really enjoyed getting into the shading of my graphite skeletal figure. Paying attention to all the little details is a signature of my artwork and personal artistic voice. I am glad to say I am proud of my work as a young artist, especially with the intricate pose the skeleton is in, crawling back to a time where it was young and thrived, clinging onto the life it has left within. I feel so honored to have won this competition and to be recognized for something that is a true passion of mine," said Mackenzie Monahan, winner of the 2022 Congressional Art Competition for Connecticut's First District.

"Mackenzie is an extremely talented artist dedicated to perfection, refinement, and detail. She has extraordinary focus and fully immerses herself into each individual piece she creates. It is this fine working process that brings her ideas to fruition at such a compelling level. Mackenzie is a risk taking, "think outside of the box', and push-it-to-the-limits artist. Mackenzie is any teacher's dream to have in class. She is a natural leader amongst her peers, her enthusiasm is contagious, and her kindness makes her truly engaging. This honor could not have gone to a more deserving student and artist," said Sara Levinthal, Art Teacher at Southington High School.

Mackenzie's piece, Clinging onto Life, and each Congressional District's winning piece of artwork from around the country, will be on display at the U.S. Capitol.
