BACON, FISCHER BILL TO HONOR PETTY OFFICER FRENCH UNANIMOUSLY PASSES SENATE

Rep. Don Bacon (NE-02) announced today that his bill H.R. 4168, passed the Senate by Unanimous Consent. This legislation will name the U.S. Post Office in Omaha's Benson area, 6223 Maple St., after Petty Officer First Class Charles Jackson French. A World War II hero with ties to Omaha, he rescued fifteen of his injured shipmates by swimming for hours pulling a life raft to safety through shark-infested waters off the coast of the Guadalcanal. Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE) introduced the companion legislation in the Senate.
"I am pleased to hear the Senate passed my bill which finally gives Petty Officer French the recognition he rightfully deserves," said Bacon. "French embodies true American valor and patriotism. Dedicating a post office in his name, allows Nebraskans and other Americans to remember those who went above and beyond the call of duty. He lived in Omaha, rose above the bigotry of the era, and his willingness to sacrifice his life to save others represents the very best of America. I thank Senator Fischer and the Nebraska delegation for their support. I look forward to the President signing this bill into law."
