Rep. Ted Budd released the following statement after the Department of Veterans Affairs' announced its plan to implement the pilot program required by the Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers for Veterans Therapy Act:

"Veterans who live with PTSD or other serious mental health conditions deserve access to every possible treatment option, including dog training therapy. I am incredibly proud to see this bipartisan law begin to be implemented in North Carolina."

Background:

The bill created a five-year pilot program at the Department of Veterans Affairs to allow veterans with mental health conditions like depression and PTSD to be eligible to receive service dogs.

The pilot program will be offered at five VA medical centers, including a center in Asheville, NC.

Rep. Budd helped introduce the PAWS for Veterans Therapy Act on March 1, 2021.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) was the lead Senate sponsor.

The bill was signed into law August 25, 2021.
