Advisory: Adams, Merriweather Host Gun Violence Prevention Event

Press Release

Date: June 1, 2022
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
Issues: Guns

On Friday, June 3 at 11:00 AM, Congresswoman Alma Adams (NC-12), Mecklenburg County District Attorney Spencer Merriweather, and gun violence prevention advocates will participate in a virtual event for Gun Violence Awareness Day. Attendees are encouraged to wear orange as Charlotte and Mecklenburg County come together to call attention to the gun violence crisis that takes more than 30 lives and wounds hundreds more in the US every single day.

The event is open to the public and open press.

"Gun violence takes many terrible forms in our country," said Adams. "It can be a school shooting, like Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, UNC Charlotte, Uvalde and too many others. It can be racially or ethnically motivated, like Charleston, Oak Creek Wisconsin, Tree of Life Synagogue, Buffalo, and too many others. It can take the form of persistent violence like murder in our streets and suicide in our homes. What all of these events have in common, however, are death, guns -- often weapons of war -- and the survivors and family members who are left behind. I will wear orange on Friday for all of the friends, family, neighbors, and children we have lost, and I will continue to work in Congress to honor their memories by ending gun violence."
