Hudson Takes Action to Address Baby Formula Shortage

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (R-NC) has cosponsored the Babies Need Formula Now Act. The legislation increases oversight and transparency in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), reduces barriers to allow more competition in the baby formula market, enhances accountability for recalls, and allows greater importation of infant formula from countries with similar standards as those in the U.S.

"As a dad of a young child, I know the last thing parents need is having to worry about where they will find baby formula to feed their children. That's why I have demanded the Biden administration and FDA act faster to address this crisis," said Rep. Hudson. "The Babies Need Formula Now Act will ensure formula can get to shelves faster, as well as make needed improvements to prevent shortages from occurring in the future."

As a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Hudson sent a letter to President Biden and FDA Administrator Califf earlier this month calling for action and demanding answers to numerous questions about the crisis. Last week, Rep. Hudson voted for the Access to Baby Formula Act to give the U.S. Department of Agriculture greater authority to support WIC participants amid this shortage. Read coverage of that bill here.

Yesterday, Rep. Hudson's Energy and Commerce Committee held a subcommittee hearing focused on baby formula with FDA Administrator Robert Califf and executives from infant formula parent companies including Abbott and Gerber. Members questioned why the Biden administration and FDA wasted time in responding to this crisis. Read more about the hearing here.
