Manning Statement on Uvalde Mass Shooting

Press Release

Date: May 25, 2022
Location: Greensboro, North Carolina

Congresswoman Kathy Manning (NC-06) released the following statement after a shooter killed nineteen students and two adults in a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

"Once again, families are experiencing unfathomable grief because a violent man, with easy access to weapons of war, orchestrated a mass shooting in an elementary school. This cannot be the violent reality we accept for our children.

"We must decide that we are willing to take action to prevent guns deaths, and we must start by taking common sense steps that the vast majority of Americans support. In Congress, I've voted for bipartisan legislation to implement background checks and red flag laws, to close the Charleston Loophole, and to make our schools, houses of worship, malls, entertainment venues, and streets free from deadly gun violence. Senate Republicans refuse to vote for these common sense measures.

"We can and we must do more to ensure the safety of our children, our families, and our community members who are living their lives in fear of gun violence. I urge the Senate to take immediate action to pass commonsense gun violence prevention legislation. In the absence of action, I implore the American people to vote for leaders who will demand a change.

"My heart breaks for the families and communities who are forever changed by yesterday's mass shooting, but it is not enough to offer thoughts and prayers. We must take action and enact solutions now."
