Location: Washington, DC

As reported by Fox News, Congressman Michael Guest (MS-03) joined more than 100 House Republicans in a letter to the Biden Administration demanding action on the ongoing baby formula shortage. The letter is addressed to President Joe Biden and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Robert M. Califf, and it requests data on the nationwide shortage and clarification on actions the Biden Administration is taking to mitigate the impact of the crisis.

"Baby formula shortages are an urgent problem that must be addressed immediately. This new problem is compounded by the historic inflation caused by the Biden administration that is already burdening families. The office of the U.S. Surgeon General states that families typically spend $1,200 to $1,500 on infant formula in the first year…. This issue is a matter of life and death, and it is time this administration treats it with the appropriate urgency it deserves," the lawmakers write in the letter.

Background:

The share of out of stock baby formula rose from 29 percent in March to 40 percent as of April 24th, according to NBC News. This has resulted in companies like CVS limiting the amount of baby formula they will sell to customers. Reports of parents rationing formula have also surfaced, as many are unable to find stores with baby formula available.

The FDA is advising parents and caregivers not to substitute homemade baby formula for FDA approved formulas.
