Congressman Thompson Announces FY 2022 Nonprofit Security Grant Program

Press Release

Date: March 24, 2022
Location: Washington, D.C.

Today, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson announces Mississippi's open application period for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) for Fiscal Year (FY) 2022. The NSGP provides funding for physical security enhancements and other security-related activities for eligible nonprofit organizations, which includes houses of worship, that are at high risk of a terrorist attack.During his time as Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, Congressman Thompson has long been a champion of the NSGP. In 2019, Congress passed the Securing American Nonprofit Organizations Against Terrorism Act(P.L. No: 116-108), sponsored by Congressman Thompson, which formally authorized the NSGP, increased NSGP funding, and made funds available to nonprofit organizations located both inside and outside urban areas. More recently, Congressman Thompson introduced H.R. 6825, the Nonprofit Security Grant Program Improvement Act of 2022, bipartisan legislation to expand and strengthen the NSGP."In recent years, there has been a surge in threats against nonprofits, most recently including an ongoing spate of bomb threats to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), including Jackson State University and Tougaloo College. The Department of Homeland Security's Nonprofit Security Grant Program provides critical Federal funding to help bolster security for nonprofits. It is of the utmost importance that communities, like ours, apply for this Federal funding to help ensure that our community is safe from terrorist attacks."All grant proposals must be submitted electronically to the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security (MOHS) email address at mohsgrants@dps.ms.gov by April 15, 2022, at 5 p.m. CST.
