CONGRESSMAN ADERHOLT SUPPORTS ADDITIONAL LEGISLATION TO FIGHT METHAMPHETAMINE EPIDEMIC

"This legislation will serve us well in our fight against meth and other drugs in the Fourth District and across our state," said Congressman Aderholt.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) today announced the House passage of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) Reauthorization Act of 2006 (H.R. 2829). This legislation reauthorizes the ONDCP in the Executive Office of the President for five years, renews congressional authorization for national programs administered by ONDCP, and makes the development and implementation of federal drug policy more streamlined, effective, and accountable.

"The looming drug problems in our area threaten the well-being of our community. Our safety, our economy, and our future must be protected from the tragic effects of this epidemic," said Congressman Aderholt. "I will persistently and aggressively continue to search for ways the federal government can partner with state and local authorities to rid ourselves of this threat."

Another national program preserved through H.R. 2829 is the High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program (HIDTA program). A qualifying geographic region, a HIDTA, is eligible to receive Federal assistance and funding for joint federal, state, and local law enforcement initiatives targeting drug trafficking activity. Morgan County is included in the Gulf Coast HIDTA, along with five other Alabama counties.

"Morgan County and our entire area will continue to feel the positive effect of this program," added the congressman.
