Date: April 28, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Drugs

Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, responded to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's announcement of proposed product standards to prohibit menthol flavored cigarettes and prohibit all non-tobacco flavors in cigars. As part of his ongoing investigations into the youth vaping epidemic and the other activities of big tobacco, Congressman Krishnamoorthi called for a ban on menthol cigarettes last April.

"After leading my subcommittee's investigations into big tobacco's targeting of children and partnering with Senator Durbin and Congressman Rush in urging the FDA to ban menthol-flavored cigarettes, I'm pleased to see the FDA taking serious action to protect young people through its new proposal to clear the market of menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars," said Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy. "While the FDA and CDC have long recognized the dangers of flavored tobacco products, this is a meaningful step to protect our children from the well-known dangers of smoking. The next step the FDA must take to protect our children from nicotine addiction is to ban all flavored e-cigarettes too."
