Hoyer Statement on Jewish American Heritage Month

House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month:

"Throughout the month of May, we celebrate the history and heritage of Jewish Americans and the vibrant communities they have built in our country. The story of America is incomplete without the struggles, triumphs, and contributions of Jewish people, many of whom arrived on our shores as refugees fleeing persecution and poverty. I've been proud to join the many outstanding Jewish Members of our House Democratic Caucus to advance the work of recognizing Jewish American Heritage Month and ensuring not only that Jewish people feel safe and fully included in our country but also that antisemitism has no place in American society.

"Jewish Americans have made enormous contributions to our country and its success, including through service in our Armed Forces, in business, in the arts and sciences, and at every level of government. They have built strong communities, fought for justice and equality for all, and played an outsized role in efforts to secure economic opportunity, freedom of speech, and freedom of worship for all people in our country. Jewish Americans' commitment to social justice and promoting equity was born out of the tragic experience of centuries of persecution as well as discrimination, including here in our country. Antisemitism is not of the past; sadly, it remains a clear and present danger today, one that must be confronted wherever it is found. The attacks in Pittsburgh, Poway, Jersey City, Colleyville, and other places have been a painful reminder of that fact. By recognizing and celebrating Jewish people's positive contributions to our country and its communities throughout Jewish American Heritage Month, we can help fight the dehumanization of Jews and push back against efforts to erase Jewish voices and perspectives from the broader work of promoting diversity, equality, inclusion, and accessibility.

"Jewish communities have also been the bedrock of our nation's steadfast and bipartisan support for the State of Israel, which continues to be an essential leg of our foreign policy and ensuring our national security. I am proud to serve as a leader of the broad, bipartisan coalition supporting the U.S.-Israel relationship in Congress, and I was glad to visit Israel once again this past February. As we celebrate Jewish American Heritage Month together, I hope that Jewish people in our country and around the world will enjoy the blessings of liberty, security, and peace throughout this month and at all times. Together, we can build a better and stronger America that draws on the talents, patriotism, and unique experiences of all its people."
