Michael is the son of ZhenDong Sun and LiDong Zheng, and was educated in American Samoa, where he attends South Pacific Academy. He has earned high grades throughout high school, and outstanding test results on both the SAT and the ACT.

In addition to qualifications such as high academics and excellent test scores, all those offered an appointment by a Service Academy also demonstrate a range of extracurricular activities, volunteering or other roles showing leadership and motivation.

"Every Service Academy appointment is the result of lots of hard work and focusing on both studies and volunteering," Amata said. "An appointment such as Michael's is well-deserved, and demonstrates leadership and initiative along with high academics. Congratulations to all of his family, teachers, and advisers for your roles in shaping the lives of our young people."
