Moolenaar Cosponsors Bill Banning Collection of Biometric Data by IRS

Statement

Date: Feb. 17, 2022

Congressman John Moolenaar has cosponsored legislation banning the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from collecting biometric data on American taxpayers. The legislation would ban biometric data collection of physical characteristics or behavioral traits that could be used to identify an individual including facial images, fingerprints, and iris scans.

"The collection of biometric information by the IRS would be drastic overreach. There is absolutely no need for the IRS to be collecting this type of information. I am proud to cosponsor this legislation that will prohibit the expansion of the IRS into Americans' lives," said Moolenaar.

The IRS was previously pursuing plans for a biometric data collection system up until Monday, when it announced it will transition away from the use of facial recognition to create new online accounts.
