Bice Blasts Democrats' Election Takeover Bill

Statement

Democrats are once again forcing a vote to nationalize our country's election laws by nefarious means -- hijacking a NASA bill meant to extend a leasing program. They're calling it the "Freedom to Vote Act," but instead of protecting Americans' voting rights, it denigrates them.

Oklahoma has by far one of the most safe and secure election processes in the nation; more states should follow our lead. However, this law will remove voting from state oversight, and into the hands of an "Elections Czar," giving the unelected U.S. Attorney General the ability to change state voting laws. Passing this legislation will limit states' ability to maintain their voter roll lists, require states to offer same-day voter registration, and allow vote-by-mail with no voter ID safeguards.

Election funding will also change under this new law, allowing your taxpayer dollars to be used to fund election campaigns. It provides for a six-to-one funding match to any donor contributions of $200 or less, meaning the federal government will match $1,200 for every $200 donated. Nancy Pelosi would receive more than $22 million toward her re-election campaign as a result. American taxpayers should not be forced to fund political campaigns.

As citizens, the right to vote is one of the most fundamental rights given to us in the constitution and it must be protected. My House Republican colleagues and I voted unanimously to reject this legislation, and it is my hope that Senate Republicans will do the same.
