Rep. Stansbury, 130 Colleagues Introduce Resolution Recognizing Congressional Workers' Right to Organize

Statement

Date: Feb. 11, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Labor Unions

This week, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) joined Rep. Andy Levin (Mich.-09) and nearly 130 House Democrats to introduce H. Res. 915, Recognizing Congressional Workers' Right to Organize.

Following the passage of the Congressional Accountability Act in 1995, the Office of Compliance and Workplace Rights ruled in 1996 that passage of this resolution was the final step to give congressional workers legal protection to organize and bargain collectively in a worker's union. Nearly three decades later, Congress is finally taking this step, and it is largely thanks to the Congressional staff demanding fair treatment and fair pay.

"Congressional staff are the backbone of our democracy," said Rep. Stansbury. "As a former Senate staffer and someone who grew up in a union family, I am proud to support our Congressional staff, and stand in full solidarity with any and all of our workers who choose to unionize. I'm proud to be an original cosponsor of this legislation."

Recognizing Congressional Workers' Right to Organize is led by Rep. Andy Levin and cosponsored by Reps. Nanette Diaz Barragán, Karen Bass, Joyce Beatty, Don Beyer, Earl Blumenauer, Lisa Blunt Rochester, Suzanne Bonamici, Jamaal Bowman, Anthony Brown, Shontel Brown, Julia Brownley, Cori Bush, Cheri Bustos, Tony Cardenas, André Carson, Matt Cartwright, Sean Casten, Joaquin Castro, Sheila Cherfilus McCormick, Judy Chu, David N.
