As voting rights have come under attack in states across the U.S. and over 30 laws have been passed by state legislatures making it harder to vote, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (N.M.-01) joined the House of Representatives this morning to pass the Freedom To Vote Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. She released the following statement calling on the Senate to pass the crucial voting rights legislation:

"Voting rights and access to the ballot box are fundamental to our democracy. This week comes on the heels of the anniversary of the Capitol insurrection and as we prepare to celebrate and honor the life, work, and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As we reflect on the work of Dr. King and the generations who have fought to expand and protect voting rights and reflect on the challenges of the last year, it is more important than ever that we pass voting rights legislation and restore faith in our democratic institutions.

"The good people of New Mexico sent me to Congress to serve our communities and get things done. To make our government work for New Mexico, we need to come together and fix what is broken. We cannot let arcane procedural rules like the filibuster stand in the way of protecting our democracy. The Senate must pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom To Vote Act."

Rep. Stansbury is a cosponsor of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Protecting Our Democracy Act and voted to pass both bills out of the House of Representatives. These bills strengthen the Voting Rights Act and introduce the most comprehensive anti-corruption reforms since Watergate to strengthen the checks and balances on our federal government.
