Expressions of the Resident Commissioner on Medicaid Financing

Date: Dec. 2, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

"Thanks to the efforts we have led, increasing the federal contribution to the Medicaid program, Puerto Rico has been able to update its allocation for this program and even welcome more beneficiaries and expand services.

The Vital Plan has the resources to maintain coverage in force until February 2022, so in the new continuous resolution, coverage was only extended to other territories that could not demonstrate the same solvency as us. It would last until February 2022.

However, it is expected that the Build Back Better Act has already been approved by the House and is expected to pass the Senate this month, including, among other provisions that we have obtained for the island, increasing the federal financing limit to $3.6 billion annually, and the FMAP would increase to 76% for this fiscal year and 83% for the next fiscal year.

May the beneficiaries of Medicaid on the island feel confident that, as I have shown from day one as your congressman, I will always be on the lookout and fight for your health coverage to be maintained and even for benefits to be added."
