Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger today announced $37.5 million in new funding for Mid-Chesapeake Bay Island construction, a project that is critical to the ecological and economic health of the Bay and Port of Baltimore. The funding comes from the bipartisan infrastructure investment bill that was signed into law in November.

Ruppersberger, a Senior Appropriator, identified the project as a top priority during committee negotiations earlier this year and requested full funding for the Army Corps of Engineers' construction account -- the source of this new funding. The project aims to rebuild eroding islands within the Chesapeake by using material dredged from the Port's shipping channels during routine maintenance, creating vibrant habitats for wildlife in the process.

"This project epitomizes the goals of the infrastructure investment bill -- helping to ease supply chain bottlenecks at our ports, building a more climate-sustainable economy and creating jobs for Maryland families," Congressman Ruppersberger said. "This project helps to ensure the Port of Baltimore and the Chesapeake Bay remain vital economic and ecological treasures for decades to come."
