Neguse Proposal to Strengthen Ethics in Government Passes House

Statement

Last night, Congressman Joe Neguse's bill to promote government accountability and oversight, the Strengthening Ethics Act of 2021, passed the House of Representatives. The legislation makes technical changes to Title 5 of the U.S. Code, elevating the Federal Advisory Committee Act, the Inspector General Act of 1978, and the Ethics in Government Act of 1978 into the bill text.

"The statutes elevated by the Act are critical to fulfilling the Judiciary Committee's mission and to upholding continued government oversight, which proves particularly critical in today's climate," said Congressman Joe Neguse, a member of the House Judiciary Committee. "This legislation follows in the footsteps of similar good governance bills proposed by my Democratic colleagues in Congress and makes a substantial step towards preserving the integrity of our democracy."

By moving these statutes into the base text of U.S. Code Title 5, the Strengthening Ethics Act of 2021 helps the Judiciary Committee promote good governance and conduct continued oversight over the United States Code. From requiring financial disclosures from public officials to maintaining independent avenues for probing misconduct, the Act and the provisions it elevates are central to upholding the highest possible standards of government accountability.

Congressman Neguse has been a champion of good governance throughout his time in Congress, cosponsoring legislation such as the For the People Act and the Protecting Our Democracy Act, both of which propose several critical measures to address issues regarding government transparency, responsiveness, and accountability.
