The U.S. House of Representatives today passed Congressman David Trone's (D-MD) bipartisan State Opioid Response Grant Authorization Act, which will extend funding to states and tribes to fight the worsening opioid epidemic on the front lines. The bill passed with a large, bipartisan majority and now awaits action in the Senate.

The bill provides funding and resources to:

prevent addiction through evidence-based programs;
increase access to outpatient and residential treatment;
decrease overdoses by expanding naloxone distribution; and
support individuals in recovery with housing and peer support programs.
"In 2016, I lost my nephew Ian to a fentanyl overdose. My mission is to prevent families from enduring the same pain," said Congressman Trone. "This funding will not only help prevent overdoses, but it will also help treatment programs and support those in recovery. With overdose fatalities skyrocketing, it's high time we stepped up to help."

Congressman Trone spoke on the floor of the U.S. House yesterday in support of his bill. His remarks can be viewed here. Congressmen Ted Deutch (D-FL), David Cicilline (D-RI), and John Curtis (R-UT) also spoke in support of the Act. Representative Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) and Republican Congressmen Jim Baird (R-IN) and Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) were also instrumental in the bill's passage as cosponsors.
