Congresswoman Ross Statement on Senate Republicans' Filibuster of the Freedom to Vote Act

Statement

Date: Oct. 20, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) released the following statement after Senate Republicans filibustered the Freedom to Vote Act:

"Americans across the country--including in North Carolina--continue to have their voting rights eviscerated by state legislatures," saidCongresswoman Ross. "Democrats responded by introducing the Freedom to Vote Act, legislation that would stop voter suppression and end partisan gerrymandering. Meanwhile, Senate Republicans proved today that not only will they refuse to support this legislation--they won't even allow debate on it.

"The right to vote is a cornerstone of American democracy. It should not be a partisan battle. By filibustering the Freedom to Vote Act today, Senate Republicans voted to shield the work of GOP legislatures intent on gutting voting rights. While today's result is disappointing, I remain committed to passing legislation to protect the fundamental rights of our most vulnerable communities."
