WASHINGTON -- Today, U.S. Rep. Susie Lee (Nev.-03) announced that nearly $1 million has been awarded to Southern Nevada colleges and universities to support campus-based child care programs and enable parents to obtain their degrees. This grant is part of the Department of Education's Child Care Access Means Parents in School Program, which aims to support the participation of low-income parents in postsecondary education through the provision of campus-based child care services. Four Nevada institutions received funds totaling $1.18 million through this program, including:

University of Nevada, Reno: $215,173.00
Nevada State College: $74,531.00
College of Southern Nevada: $435,179.00
University of Nevada, Las Vegas: $460,091.00
"Right now, I'm focused on getting Nevada's economy back on track, and expanding access to child care is a critical part of that equation," said Rep. Lee. "I'm so proud to see that these funds have been awarded to incredible Southern Nevada institutions that are providing for my constituents, including the University of the Nevada, Las Vegas, the College of Southern Nevada, and Nevada State College. Access to child care will enable parents, especially low-income parents to follow their dreams and obtain the secondary educations they need to pursue them."

"These funds for child care access are vital as they will enable UNLV to provide stipends to low-income students with young children," said Sunny Gittens, UNLV executive director of student engagement. "It's a true win-win for both our students and their children, as we'll be able to keep more of our students in school and on-track to graduate while at the same time opening doors to quality early childhood education for our students' children."

"At CSN, our goal is to make sure our students complete their education. This grant will help us do just that by making sure that students who are also parents can stay in school," said Dr. Federico Zaragoza, President of the College of Southern Nevada. "Our Early Childhood Education Lab has been a critical part of CSN's Students First philosophy. I want to thank the U.S. Department of Education and our congressional delegation for their hard work and dedication to Southern Nevada's college students. We are all in this together -- parents, students, and children alike."

"Nevada State College is pleased to once again be a recipient of this grant on behalf of our students," said Dr. DeRionne Pollard, President of Nevada State College. "This grant will help student-parents offset the high costs of childcare. The funds will go directly to our students with the greatest financial need so they can continue their education and complete their degree."
