Newhouse Backs School Choice

Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) cosponsored two pieces of legislation introduced by Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) to support and expand school choice. The NO Corrupt Racist Training (NO CRT) Act would make funding opportunities available to families to cover private school tuition, homeschooling expenses, and educational materials if they currently attend a school teaching or advancing Critical Race Theory. The Mask Off Act, would allow students to access Opportunity Grants to cover private school tuition, homeschooling expenses, and the cost of educational materials if they attend a school that requires them to wear masks.
"All families should have the choice to receive quality instruction regardless of income, zip code, or personal belief," said Rep. Newhouse. "These two bills will ensure that parents are able to provide quality education for their children in a way that respects both the families and the school choices they may make. It's time we start funding students instead of systems. Equipping families to make their own choices is the only way forward."
"Federal education dollars should follow America's students, not the system. This should be true in all cases, but especially if a school is forcing masks on children or teaching divisive Critical Race Theory. If such mandates or indoctrinating curricula are in place, then families should be able to do what is best for their own kids and have the freedom to pursue alternative education options," said Rep. Bishop. "My bills will help families do that. Our education system must serve our students--not the agenda of the Leftist political class."
Background:
Both pieces of legislation provide access to grants that are mean tested based on household income.
Both pieces of legislation preclude the federal government from impacting any aspect of private, religious, or home education providers, discriminating against religious providers, or requiring any change in creed, practice, admissions policy, or curriculum.
