Tillis Statement on Terrorist Attacks, Evacuation Efforts

Statement

Date: Aug. 26, 2021

Today, U.S. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) issued the following statement:

"Our servicemembers have been heroic in their efforts to evacuate Americans and Afghans. The terrorist attacks in Kabul are horrific and jeopardize our efforts to evacuate American citizens and our Afghan friends and allies.

"As of this morning, my office was still assisting more than 1,000 Afghans trying to evacuate. They were referred to my office by North Carolina veterans and servicemembers who know them well. These Afghans are SIVs and friends of the United States, and they include their spouses and young children. We must pray for the safety of our servicemembers, American civilians, and Afghan allies, and pray we still have the opportunity to get out those who are stranded.

"We must also pray for the veterans and servicemembers who have been frantically trying to help their friends in Afghanistan who they served alongside with. They share memories, kinship, and their progress in healing from the wounds of war. What is unfolding is devastating, and they are hurting right now."
