Press Release

Date: July 29, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND), a Senate Armed Services Committee member, issued the following statement on the Senate passing a $2.1 billion emergency security supplemental appropriations bill today:

"This year we have asked both the Capitol Police and the National Guard to go above and beyond what is normally required of them, and while they have done so admirably, their increased activity has drained their available resources much faster than usual. The bill we passed today will address this shortfall by providing the brave officers and Guard members who keep us safe with the funds they need to do their job. It also fixes funding shortfalls in our effort to ensure those who helped our country during the war in Afghanistan are not forgotten or left behind during this year's troop withdrawal. I thank my colleagues for supporting this important, urgent effort, and I call on the House of Representatives to pass it quickly so the President can sign it without delay."

As this issue began to unfold, Senator Cramer worked with North Dakota's National Guard leaders like the Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Alan Dohrmann, to make sure the Guard has the resources it needs. The legislation passed by the Senate today provides $400 million for the U.S. Capitol Police and increased Capitol security measures, over $1 billion for the Department of Defense including more than $500 million for the National Guard, and $500 million for the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program.
