Moolenaar Supports Legislation to Honor Harriet Tubman

Congressman John Moolenaar has signed on as a cosponsor of the Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Commemorative Coin Act, which would direct the Department of the Treasury to mint and issue $5 gold coins, $1 silver coins, and half-dollar coins depicting Harriet Tubman's legacy as an abolitionist. Under the legislation, the coins would be minted to commemorate next year's bicentennial of Tubman's birth on March 6, 1822 in Maryland.

"Harriet Tubman escaped slavery and led others to freedom through her work with the Underground Railroad in addition to her work for the Union during the Civil War and as a leader in the women's suffrage movement. She lived a truly remarkable life dedicated to helping others and giving a voice to those who needed it," said Congressman Moolenaar. "I'm proud to support this legislation that would honor her legacy and serve as a reminder of all she accomplished to make our nation a better place."

All surcharges from the sale of the commemorative coins received by the Treasury would be paid equally to the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn, New York and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio to help fulfill their missions of telling the stories of abolitionists and sharing Harriet Tubman's inspiring legacy.
