Congressman Anthony Brown: January 6th Guard Delays Raise Serious Questions

Press Release

Date: June 15, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement on newly released House Committee on Oversight and Reform timelines showing repeated requests by local officials for National Guard help during the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol:

"As President Trump incited an attack on our nation's Capitol in order to overturn the results of a free and fair election, his Administration delayed the National Guard response. At 1:34 PM, Mayor Bowser called for additional forces. She would be followed soon after by Capitol Police, D.C. Homeland Security and D.C. police. National Guard Assistance was requested twelve times, yet Army leaders repeatedly told officials to "standby' while officers were beaten and the halls of our democracy were vandalized.

"The responsibility for this delayed response to this serious threat to national security and the foundations of our democracy lies squarely on former President Trump and former Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller. The American people deserve full accountability, transparency and corrective action."
