A Bill for The Admission of Puerto Rico as A State Is Filed in The Federal Senate

Statement

Date: March 17, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

The United States Senate has before it a bill to admit Puerto Rico as a state of the Union that is a brother to the one that on March 2 was presented by the Resident Commissioner, Jenniffer González Colón, along with Darren Soto and that it already has another 56 co-authors.

"Puerto Rico will never have economic prosperity if it does not come out of territorial status. In a democracy, the only mandate is that of the people and Puerto Rico has already chosen statehood on three consecutive occasions. With our bill in the House and now with its version in the Senate, Congress must act, we present the guidelines to follow, the same ones used by the last two territories to be a state: Hawaii and Alaska. Thanks to Senator Martin Heinrich for leading this effort in the Senate. I reiterate my call to other colleagues from both parties in both bodies to give way to democracy, that we enforce the will of an entire people and not ignore this claim for civil rights, "said the resident commissioner.
