Sarbanes Votes to Strengthen Rights of American Workers

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today voted to pass the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act (H.R. 842), a bill to help American workers form unions and organize to increase paychecks, improve benefits and enhance workplace safety.

The PRO Act would also hold corporations, managers and corporate executives accountable for violating workers' rights.

"This significant effort to empower American workers will help improve wages and benefits for millions of families across the country," said Congressman Sarbanes, who co-sponsored the PRO Act. "We can no longer allow wealthy and well-connected corporations to call the shots and stack the deck against hardworking Americans. The PRO Act will protect the right to organize and enable workers to negotiate higher wages, better benefits and safer working conditions."

Key provisions of the PRO Act include:

Expanding workers' collective bargaining rights and closing loopholes that corporations use to exploit workers;

Preventing employers from misclassifying workers, including gig workers, as independent contractors;

Holding companies and executives accountable for violating workers' rights; and

Ensuring free and fair union elections.
