Congressman Gomez Votes to Pass Transformative Voting Rights Legislative Package

Today, Congressman Gomez joined his House Democrats colleagues in voting to pass H.R. 1, the For the People Act, a sweeping anti-corruption package to clean up Washington, protect and expand voting rights, restore integrity to government, and put the needs and priorities of the American people ahead of special interests.

"As Republicans work to implement restrictive voting measures in state legislatures across the country, House Democrats are pushing back and passing bold voting rights reform packages like the For the People Act," said Congressman Gomez. "No one -- be it Republican politicians or the special interest groups who do their dirty work -- should be able to stand between our constituents and their fundamental right to participate in our democracy. That's why I'm proud to have voted to pass this legislation in our ongoing efforts to amplify the voices of all Americans, especially voters of color who have historically been disenfranchised and systematically turned away from polling places."

The For the People Act includes provisions from Congressman Gomez's bill, the Executive Branch Conflict of Interest Act¸ which reduces the influence of industry lobbyists on senior government officials and addresses the revolving door between lobbying firms and the government by strengthening and enhancing ethics requirements for federal employees.

The For the People Act also contains the following provisions:

Creates automatic voter registration and ensures same-day registration across the country;
Expands early voting and enhances voting by mail and absentee voting, especially for Americans abroad;
Makes Election Day a national holiday;
Requires states to complete congressional redistricting via independent commissions;
Restores full voting rights to all persons who have completed felony sentences;
Increases federal support for voting system security;
Delivers full congressional voting rights and self-government to the District of Columbia;
Upgrades online political ad disclosure requirements and requires all political organizations to disclose large donors;
Creates a public campaign financing "multiple matching system" that breaks the stranglehold of special interests on Congress;
Restructures the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to better enforce campaign finance regulations;
Requires presidents to disclose their tax returns and more.
Congressman Gomez first voted to pass the For the People Act in March 2019.

A recent report by the Brennan Center found that 253 bills geared toward restricting voting access have been introduced in 43 states in 2021.
